Occasionally patients ask what they can do to speed up their teeth straightening progress. Can I have aligners designed to perform more aggressive teeth rotations? Can I wear every aligner for 7 days only, and then move to the next one? How about wearing the aligner for 24 hours a day?
As well as you can't build muscles in the gym with one visit, with teeth straightening process and wearing transparent aligners, good things really do come to those who have enough patience.
Last week, an eon Aligner patient sent us an email, asking how he could make his orthodontic treatment plan faster. He wanted to finish his aligner treatment before his engagement date.
Since aligners almost immediately force teeth into their future position, I wonder if it is possible to wear each aligner for 2 days, and then move onto the next one?
In the past, aligner companies have experimented with various treatment plans and the duration of wearing clear aligners. Some of them asked patients to wear aligners for 10 days, three weeks and even 7 days. After years of studies, biomechanical and orthodontic researches define 14 days as the perfect required time between each set of aligners. Why so?
Your teeth are effectively anchored into your upper jaw bone and lower jaw bone through their roots (which literally ‘sit’ inside the bone). If we try to move the teeth too fast, without giving the bone and gum time to adjust and fit into their new position, we might have the crown (a visible part of the teeth that we can see) moving at a faster pace than the root, which can lead to unwanted uncontrolled tipping (when the root of the tooth moves in the opposite direction).
This also can lead to a host of difficulties, including root showing and the weakened stability of the teeth! Most likely you will also need to order a new set of aligners during the treatment, when it becomes obvious that your orthodontic case is not progressing as originally planned.
Our best advice: take it one step at a time, have patience, follow your doctor's recommendation about wearing aligners, and soon you will have the best smile possible in your case.
In brief, it is important to wear each aligner for a minimum of 2 weeks to:
The best part is that you don’t need to worry about most of these issues. As a patient, you need to make sure you are following the rules your orthodontist told you about.
Wear your aligner for 20-22 hours a day, for 14 days in a row. This will ensure that your planned treatment teeth movements occur and will keep any unwanted surprises away from you.
